Topic

Façade detailing for low energy consumption

Talk points

Principles of passive design using the inherent qualities of the construction
Focus on climates where complete natural ventilation is not possible due to the harshness of the climate, hence mechanical HVAC is necessary
Examples of how simple improvements in the design and detailing of the building envelope can result in considerable energy savings in the operation of HVAC sysytems
Case studies of projects where such improvements could be made and show likely savings in energy and hence cost reduction

Topic

Special Keynote -Optimizing structural efficiency and sustainability in façade design

Talk points

In every climate, façade design may be optimized to take advantage of unique site features, orientation, materiality and use
Sharing three projects in the tropical climate of Singapore, with differing uses and geometries, this presentation will review how the design and construction teams partnered to integrate and optimize architectural and structural efficiency
In each case, the use of a variety of traditional and emerging tools, including parametric modeling and customized computer scripts, as well as actual mockups in the field, to refine steelwork and exterior building material system choices
Examples include the fractalization of the façade with stepped terraces at a residential tower, Sky Habitat; the finely-tuned building assemblies of steel structure and glass and metal panels at Jewel at Changi Airport; and the fabrication sequencing and engineering of the complex façades of the Marina Bay Sands complex
Insight on how occupant comfort and architectural expression is enhanced by the exploration of daylighting, energy modeling, solar and shade analysis
